Jason Newsted

For fifteen years, Jason Newsted was the bass player for the biggest heavy metal band in the world. Joining Metallica in 1986, he appeared on The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited (recorded, appropriately enough, in a garage). But his official debut came with the eight million selling double album, ...And Justice For All, the irony being that his brilliant, ground-shaking contributions could barely be heard, buried beneath two-ton layers of guitar riffs. Citing musical frustration (not hearing problems as reported), Newsted left and formed the shortlived Echobrain, later joining Canadian avant-garde metal band Voivod. Seen most recently on the smash hit reality TV show Rockstar: Supernova, Newsted pulls off a wide-range of hard rock/metal bass licks with his not-often-seen finger picking and bass slap style, as well as his shoulder-driven down stroke picking technique which gives him his proprietary sound.
