They say “good things come in small packages” and with New Jersey-native bassist/vocalist, Pete Kamenakis (aka Petey K), that’s what you get and then some! This pint-sized bassist brings an energy to the stage that must be seen and heard to believe.
The N.A.I.R.M.A. nominated (Outstanding Bassist) musician began playing bass at age twelve, after two years of playing both trumpet and violin By age fourteen Kamenakis dropped everything else and was playing only bass and singing vocals in a band. Later during his freshman year in college, Kamenakis developed his song writing talent and used this skill as leader of the Delaware-Based band Pillage. During that time, Kamenakis shared stages with The Tubes, Noel Redding/Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience), and Great White. As a graduate of Musicians Institute (BIT, 1990), Kamenakis hit the road with a touring band from Cincinnati, OH where he served as bassist/vocalist and musical director and honed his style of combining rock/R&B for his signature groove. Some describe his style as a mixture of Motown, Pop, Funk, R&B, and Rock. Whatever the ingredients are, the end result will have you moving.
About his Ampeg gear Kamenakis says, “all my life, I’ve wanted to own the legendary Ampeg amplifier and cabinet. That tone. That muscle. That clarity. It’s simply unmatched. When I performed in an original band, a cover band, and a tribute band – all at the same time, it was essential to have a variety of tones. With my SVT-3PRO head and 4×10 cab, I had that ability…AND nobody (drums, guitars, etc.) could drown me out! My tone that I love can simply FILL a stage! And once I added the SCR-DI, life was complete! It can serve as a second tone for supporting the soloist or for a different tone/vibe within a song; without having to switch anything. Love, love, love my Ampeg gear!”
Although Kamenakis had been splitting his performance and recording time between projects such as his band, N.A.I.R.M.A. semi-finalist (Best Male Fronted Group 2016) Helmz Edge, and the tribute band Van Halen Nation, he’ll be adding his solo project Petey K to the list of activities. And if you’ve seen and heard Petey K onstage, you know this will be exciting!
